Money back on hurricane hardening

Florida has a few ways to recover some of what you spend on hurricane windows, doors, and roof upgrades. Each one has rules that trip people up, and some are worth a lot more than others depending on your home and income. These guides explain how each one actually works, with links to the official sources and the date we last checked them.

How they fit together

  1. Start with an inspection. A wind mitigation inspection shows what your home already has and what's worth upgrading. If you qualify for My Safe Florida Home, the program's inspection is free.
  2. Line up the paperwork before you sign. If you'll claim the sales tax refund, ask your installer up front for the supplier receipt you'll need. If you're in My Safe Florida Home, wait for written grant approval before any work starts.
  3. Document the finished work. A new inspection after the upgrade is how your insurer sees the change.
